As the Director of Sports Medicine, Theron oversees all aspects of the medical care for all teams in the Dynamo organization: Houston Dynamo (MLS), Houston Dash (NWSL), RGVFC Toros (USL) and Dynamo Academy (US Soccer). He additionally serves as the Head ATC for the Dynamo.
Theron joined the Dynamo in 2008 after 9 seasons with the Colorado Rapids. Originally hired as the Assistant Athletic Trainer in 1999 before he was promoted to the Head Athletic Trainer position in 2000, Theron brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Dynamo. A Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and a Licensed Athletic Trainer (LAT) by the State of Texas, he received his bachelor's degree from Point Loma Nazarene College and a master’s degree from Western Michigan University.
A founding member and two-time past President of the Professional Soccer Athletic Trainer Association (PSATS), Theron’s career has seen him work with the New York Jets and Villanova University as well as provide event coverage for ESPN Winter X Games, CONCACAF Gold Cup, NCAA Men’s College Cup and U.S. Soccer Men's National Team. His league honors include working on the staff for the 1999, 2009 and 2010 MLS All Star Games, MLS Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2002 and 2008 and 2011 as well as serving on the MLS Athletic Trainers Advisory Committee in 2003 and the 2005-2008 Soccer Industry Medical Symposium (now MLS Medical Symposium) Curriculum Committee. Theron is married to his wife Marla and lives in Houston.
Chris Rumsey joined the Houston Dynamo sports medicine team in July 2016, coming from Oregon State University where he primarily covered men’s soccer. He received his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Capital University in Columbus, OH and his master’s degree in science in sports medicine from Oregon State University. He has experience at all levels of soccer as an athletic trainer and was a four year letterwinner on the soccer team in college.
